Physical Therapy is so much more than a service that is provided to patients during their rehabilitation process. As medicine and healthcare continues to evolve and progress, so has physical therapy. A very large focus of Apogee Therapy Center is promoting Injury Prevention. Many patients come to physical therapy injured physically and emotionally distraught due to their injuries and how it has negatively impacted their daily lives. One of the goals we have as clinicians is improving function, and as function improves pain in turn decreases. As pain decreases, patients tend to be motivated to keep their functional fitness progressing in order to prevent an injury from occurring again. We strive to teach our patients functional fitness activities they can continue to utilize once they are discharged from our care.
Many of the orthopedic injuries we regularly treat are non-surgical, and could have been easily avoided if the patient was educated in appropriate injury prevention measures, or were physically more involved in a fitness program. Many times, we hear patients say: “My doctor told me I shouldn’t participate in functional fitness activities such as Hiking, Crossfit, Running, Obstacle Course racing, weight lifting, etc, due to my orthopedic issue”. We frequently respond to these statements as follows:
What is more life threatening, your minor orthopedic issue; or having high A1c levels and developing life threatening diseases such as Diabetes and Heart disease due to inactivity?
We never tell patients what they shouldn’t or can’t do when it comes to functional fitness goals. We listen to patient’s goals, and TEACH PATIENTS how they can safely participate in activities with the least amount of pain development and functioning at their personal Peak Performance.
We have sought out athletes in our local communities who represent Apogee, and our mission to promote healthy nutrition/training habits. These are people who have jobs, families, and bills – but they make fitness a priority in their life and wear it on their sleeve like a badge of honor! They are assisting Apogee in getting the message out regarding Injury Prevention methods, training smarter, and eating smarter
